We conducted 05 workshops and 03 consultation meetings from 09-07-2017 to 31-08-2017 in different areas of the country with the aim of raising the public awareness of commercial sexual exploitation of children (#CSEC), sexual exploitation of children online (#SECO), other forms of child abuse, child exploitation based on tourism and preventive mechanisms etc.
The 05 workshops were conducted for the members of District Children Council, members of District Child Development Committees in the Kurunegala, Polonnaruwa, Puttalam, and Badulla, covering over 400 participants. Consequences of child abuse, social problems triggered by child abuse, cyber crimes and the safe use of the Internet and social media, child marriage and its negative impacts on the education of children, responsibilities of the stakeholders and government officials, child sex tourism etc., were discussed in detail during the full range of workshops.
Two consultation meetings were held in Polonnaruwa on 14-07-2017: One with 40 stakeholders in the travel and tourism industry to introduce activities of PEaCE to the hoteliers association and tour guide association with the intention of promoting ‘The Code’ among them and the other with 41 civil society organization members to further address the issues prevailing in the district and introduce our activities for them to approach us when required.
As usual, we employed our newly adopted strategy, Forum Theatre sessions, to make a strong impressionf among the participants, which was highly successful.
