Katharagama Educational Support Program: 23 and 24 Jan 2017

PEaCE joined hands with the Janashakthi Bank and the Hambanthota Women’s Development Federation (HWDF) to support the education of 20 street children. Following a research conducted in the Katharagama area, PEaCE identified 20 most vulnerable street children and provided them with educational support. A bank account was opened in each child’s name with a deposit of Rs. 5000/-. This endeavour aims to encourage children to go to school and pursue their education than beg on the street. The PEaCE team alongside officials from the Bank, school principals and (HWDF) visited families and parents of the children and conducted meetings on the importance of education for their children and why begging is harmful to the well being of children. Parents were encouraged to visit the bank and work with PEaCE to obtain access to the bank accounts. Children have the privilege of accessing the account in times of need and purchasing material important for their education. The bank will be encouraging the children and their families to deposit money that is taken by providing an interest to the account.
